Guest Blog: Rural North Wellington Hosts Organization Unique to Ontario

Date: May 19, 2017

Rural North Wellington is home to an organization called the Seniors Centre of Excellence (SCE) which has been welcoming, celebrating and caring for seniors in Mapleton, Minto and Wellington North since 2008.

A group of citizens and three rural Municipalities were motivated by their goal of creating a series of programs in local small towns and rural areas to ensure that seniors in the communities are healthy, happy, engaged and able to live at home as long as possible.

The group applied for and received an "Aging at Home" grant from the Waterloo-Wellington Local Health Integration Network. It has resulted in a wide ranging suite of programs for seniors, capably organized by a full time Manager. Even better, services are just one simple phone call away.

SCE offers social and exercise programs, as well as coordinating volunteer services such as driving, visiting, yard clean up, snow shoveling, and hazardous material pickup. A monthly events calendar is made available and the organization also assists with system navigation. SCE also arranges housekeeping services and meal delivery and can provide nutritious food baskets.

The Seniors Centre of Excellence partners with community volunteers, the three Municipalities, service clubs and churches. There is nowhere else in rural Ontario where several municipalities and volunteers are working together to support a similar program and the organization would be happy to share their expertise with other rural areas.
