Stakeholder Consultation on the Development of Government Response Statements and Habitat Regulations for Lake Sturgeon and Polar Bear
|
Two iconic species in Ontario, Lake Sturgeon and Polar Bear are currently at risk. Under the Endangered Species Act, 2007, a recovery strategy containing scientific advice to government on the protection and recovery of the species must be prepared. As communicated previously, the recovery strategies for Lake Sturgeon and Polar Bear have been completed and were posted on the Ministry of Natural Resources Species at Risk website on December 7, 2011: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/Species/2ColumnSubPage/287123.html.
Following receipt of the recovery strategies, the government must now prepare a government response statement and habitat regulation for each of these species. A government response statement outlines the actions that the Government of Ontario intends to take in order to protect and recover the species. A habitat regulation provides a legal description of the area that will be protected under the Endangered Species Act, 2007 as the habitat of the species.
Prior to drafting these products, we would like to gather input from stakeholders, Aboriginal communities, and the public on what should be included in the government response statements and habitat regulations. In particular, we are seeking feedback and any concerns on the recommendations made in the recovery strategy. We would value your input on the actions that would need to be taken in order to protect and recover Polar Bear and Lake Sturgeon and their habitat. To do this, we have scheduled the following three stakeholder consultation sessions:
Toronto
Thursday, February 2nd from 10am – 3:30 pm
Travelodge Hotel Toronto Airport
925 Dixon Rd., Toronto, ON M9W 1J8
Thunder Bay
Tuesday, February 7th from 10am – 3:30 pm
Travelodge Hotel Airport
698W Arthur St., Thunder Bay, ON P7E 3Y6
Sudbury
Wednesday, February 22nd from 10am – 3:30 pm
Ambassador Hotel
225 Falconbridge Rd., Sudbury, ON P3A 5K4
We would like to invite your organization to attend these sessions. Please also feel free to extend this invitation within your networks. If you would like to attend a consultation session, please pre-register by contacting:
Joanne Osborne
Phone: (705) 755-5339
Fax: (705) 755-5483
Email: recovery.planning@ontario.ca
Please let Joanne know which session(s) you would like to attend and whether you are interested in discussing Lake Sturgeon and/or Polar Bear. If you have special accommodation needs, please let us know when you register.
The deadline for registration for all sessions is January 25, 2012.

The Monieson Centre is pleased to announce several free consulting opportunities for businesses and community groups in Eastern Ontario. We are currently accepting nominations for two consulting initiatives:
1) We have funding for two immediate projects with Eastern Ontario businesses and community groups. These projects would commence within the next three weeks and would be conducted by fourth-year Bachelor of Commerce students. Potential issues include strategic planning, business plans, marketing research and strategy, business 911, and IT issues.
2) We have additional funding for up to 20 consulting projects with our Master of Global Management and MBA programs with local for-profit businesses. These projects can cover a number of issues including those listed above, product development, process management, organizational strategy, and more. Projects will be arranged in October-November, and will begin in the new year.
These are both valuable opportunities to have our students provide free, in-depth support to local organizations.

Labour Force Recruitment
|
I have worked with newcomers and finding employment for almost 20 years. Rural employers can benefit from the skills and experience newcomers bring. Skills International has over 4,000 candidates in a free searchable database. I am a rural gal myself and know the value that diversity can bring to communities. I hope every community will make themselves aware of the partnership project ROI is involved in that aims to provide more information for small towns and rural communities to better understand their relative attractiveness to newcomers. It is Entitled "Benchmarking Rural Ontario Community Attractiveness to Newcomers". Also worth exploring is the CIRRO Project and the Toolkit available on that site. Seniors’ Housing: Demand and Supply on the Rural Landscape
|
My name is Fiona Heesen and I am an MSc candidate in Rural Planning and Environmental Management at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. The programme serves to integrate the management and development of land with environmental objectives, highlighting current global pressures for sustainable development. As part of my degree, I am completing an independent thesis project, focusing on planning for demographic change and looking at how rural communities are providing seniors’ housing and care. I am particularly interested in Assisted Living or Supportive Housing concepts as an alternative option for seniors and if there is a place for such facilities in small town Ontario.
I invite any individuals or organisations from across Ontario who are involved in innovative approaches to supportive or assisted living, particularly in smaller towns and communities, to contact me via the email below. I am hoping to gain valuable insight into best practice for seniors’ care and housing in Ontario and new methods to apply in the rural setting.
